Hello again. Well day two in Murphys started out a little cloudy and I don't mean the sky!  Actually the weather in the Gold Country was quite beautiful that morning.  We were lucky enough to stay at my friends brother's home up above Murphys and had a wonderful view of the hillsides!  Our first stop of the day was for breakfast in Murphys on Main Street.  We went to Grounds. It was a lovely place with inside and outside seating.  We enjoyed the morning outside with Bloody Mary's and Mimosa's.  The second day at Murphys (there is no apostrophe; you will read why when you click on the link) was saved to visit the outlying areas of the Gold Country.  At breakfast we mapped out the wineries we wanted to visit.  But before we left Main Street we stopped at one last winery, Frog's Tooth. They had some lovely wines and the staff was very nice!

Now we are off to visit the first Gold Country wineries off of Main Street, Ironstone Vineyards. 
Ironstone is a very large winery with a huge tasting room/deli, a museum and an amphitheatre where they hold concerts.  When you first enter Ironstone you see these amazing wine barrels planted with tulips and daffodils. It is so beautiful and I couldn't get over the amazing colors.  We were tasting a few wines when in walked a gold mine - really he was!  He showed us the gold he had taken from the river, but he wouldn't tell us where for fear we would want to start panning for gold.  He was a very interesting character with many stories. Ironstone has gold panning on their property. 

As we were  getting ready to leave, John Kautz (Kautz family owns Ironstone Vineyards) came in. I introduced myself and he offered to give us a tour of the jewelry shoppe/museum.  The museum is filled with historical artifacts. Here is John showing us some of the many historical pieces he has curated for the museum.  One he is especially proud of is the Gold Leaf specimen.  It is housed in a bank safe-type room for temperature and security reasons.   We then set off to visit some other wineries, Indian Rock and Coppermine.  Indian Rock is a small winery with a lovely pond to have a picnic around.  On Saturdays they BBQ for their winery guests.  Indian Rock had a lovely Barbera that made its way home with me!  Coppermine was next. They provided you with pub tables to do your tasting.  They also paired their wine with potato chips and chocolate. I could not have asked for a better combination!!  Last but not least we went to visit Twisted Oak Winery.  You drive up a twisted road with many roadside attractions along the way.   It is a fun drive through the vineyards and it overlooks the hills of the Gold Country. 

Here we tasted a few wines that were not in their tasting room on Main Street.  As we left the winery there is a large frog that looks like a rubber chicken. In our travels we saw a few of these large frogs and the story is that Calaveras County (where Murphys is located) is known for their jumping frog contests.  So here we are at our last stop with a frog that looks like a rubber chicken!

As we are leaving I stop to take one more picture and I feel like I am on top of the world or at least
"Queen of The Sierra."  
 

It was a wonderful two days in the Gold Country.  It is easily a day trip and you can stay at one of the Sacramento area hotels and enjoy one day visiting Sacramento, California, attractions, like Old Sacramento.  Or make a weekend of it and stay in one of the lovely and quaint Gold Country hotels!!  That is all for now.   I hope you enjoyed the tale of Murphys. Hello all you lovers of wine!!  I know many of you have been to wineries in California and in asking around I found that several of my co-workers and friends have been to Murphys in Calaveras County.  Well, I had not until now!!  Murphys is in the Gold Country and is known as the Queen of Sierra. 

I am excited to get to talk about Murphys but I must start at the beginning.  My girlfriends and I left
Sacramento on Saturday morning.  We were in the car 10 minutes and made a stop at Lidos Bar & Grill in Carmichael. I told the girls we didn't get very far. in Lidos we planned our trip and within the hour we were on the road with The Sacramento Regional Wine Tasting Guide and Map and heading towards the Gold Country and the town of Murphys!  One of my friends grew up near Murphys and she loves wine so I knew I was in good hands! 

The drive at this time of year was absolutely beautiful; all the hillsides were green and they looked like green velvet blankets!  We arrived in Murphy's in about 90 minutes.  We drove down Main Street in Murphys where you see several wine tasting rooms, quaint shops and restaurants and Gold Country Hotels.  We parked and began the day with our first winery, Twisted Oak.  They served us some lovely wines. Most of the reds were of the Spanish varietal.  We were told that the owner was talking about one of his wines and stated that it pairs with chicken. He said, "it's so good it would pair with a rubber chicken!" (We didn't actually have any rubber chickens to eat.)

Our next stop was Newsome-Harlow Wines. The first wine we tasted was their Sauvignon Blanc, one of my favorite varietals. It was lovely and several bottles were enjoyed at the tasting room and will be enjoyed at home.  Newsome-Harlow has several other delicious  wines. One red I really enjoyed was named Train Wreck, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah! There is a wonderful outside patio and we were told that on sunny warm days it is the place to be.  We were also treated to their restaurant The Kitchen, it is adjacent to the tasting room and is open to the public on Fridays and Saturdays. The other days it is used for their wine club. All these wineries we are visiting are on Main Street in Murphys, so we are taking a nice stroll looking at the quaint shops, restaurants and the unique Gold Country hotels available for your enjoyment.

Now we get to eat dinner. There are a lot of nice restaurants to choose from, we chose Mineral because my girlfriend is a
vegetarian and she knew the chef. Here we are enjoying our dinner, I chose the Mineral Burger which was delicious. We brought in a Barbera that we purchased from Hatcher and had a lovely dinner with old and new friends 

That is the end of Day One in Murphys. I hope you enjoyed reading about Main Street in Murphys, Queen of the Sierra. The next day we visit some of the Gold Country wineries that surround Murphys! You will see at the end of Day Two why I thought I was Queen of the Sierra!!

Wine aficionados and wine novices alike should be on the alert to next Tuesday’s 2nd Annual Riedel Wine Tasting Seminar, this year held at the gorgeous Arden Hills Resort Club & Spa from 6:30pm-9pm.

Event planner Catrina Maria assures no prior knowledge of wine is needed: “Anyone would enjoy this seminar and those who do not love wine already may find they enjoy it more after drinking wine from the correct glass. It opens your eyes to how different the same wine can taste.” Being a wine novice myself, I can’t wait to gain a little insight into how a wine glass affects the flavor of the wine and expand the breadth of my wine knowledge beyond the basics.

The workshop, presented by Sylvie Laly, showcases Riedel’s Vinum XL glasses and teaches you how to pair the correct glass with the correct wine. Special guest, Chris Macias, food and wine writer for the Sacramento Bee, will also be present to share his personal wine knowledge.

Sacramento365.com Managing Editor, Rachael Lankford, who attended the event last year, says “What I was most astonished with was when we tasted the wine in a plastic cup and then compared it to tasting it in a glass. I was blown away! The wine tasted completely different—you couldn’t even taste the wonderful qualities of the wine that the winemaker had so carefully cultivated…it changed my entire wine tasting perspective.”

Tastings will be provided by Sean Minor Wines, one of many fine wineries in California. Catrina Maria divulges that tastes of the 2010 Sonoma County Sauvignon Blanc, 2010 Central Coast Chardonnay, 2010 Cerneros Pinot Noir, and newly-released 2009 Napa Valley Cabernet will be poured at the event, plus nine food samplings will be provided. Come thirsty & hungry!

In addition to the wine tastings, food samplings, and the seminar itself, the $75 ticket price also includes a set of 4 Riedel Vinum XL glasses, like the ones you’ll be testing at the event. The 4-set usually costs $123 by itself, so either way you look at it, you’re getting a deal!

The Sacramento Convention & Visitors Bureau just released the revised Sacramento Regional Wine Tasting Guide & Map. 

Upon my return from my two week vacation in Southern California I decided to end it with a trip to some surrounding Sacramento Wineries.  I wanted to show a friend some different areas to taste wine so we took the new Sacramento Wine Tasting Guide & Map and decided to check out Amador County!  It was a beautiful Sunday for wine tasting.  We followed the directions on the map to get to Amador County; the directions took us through some beautiful rolling hills and farmland and we drove into the town of Plymouth.  The first winery we stopped at was Wilderotter Vineyards, a small quaint winery.  They are known for their Sauvignon Blanc, as they should be; it was delicious, so we purchased a bottle.  Next we went to Bella Piazza a beautiful winery, larger then the first.  It was their wine club pick up day so they were serving free lunch to their wine club members. 
From there we went to Vino Noceto winery and that is where the fun began, not that is was not fun before, but we ran into some friends from Sacramento. That is him in his cowboy hat and gold caddy!!  
Outside of Vino Noceto winery sits a fun statue which doesn't have a lot to do with wine but it is a conversation piece. It came from Doggy Diner which the owners of the winery purchased for minimal dollars and have been offered several thousands for it, but will not sell it.  The wines were great and we enjoyed their 2008 Nutz, a Sangiovese blend under the label Tutti i Giorni, meaning "everyday" in Italian. It too was exquiste, and was purchased by us! Our next stop was Andis Winery, which is right across the street from Vino Noceto.  You can't miss this winery as the building is brand new and state-of-the-art.  They offer some lovely wines and for all those beer lovers, they have an IPA on tap....and they keg a Petite Sirah so you can buy a pint of beer or a glass of wine and sit outside, as we did with lunch and good conversation.  The grounds are lovely and there are vineyards everywhere you turn! 

Now we are off to our last stop: Cooper Vineyards, another small lovely winery. We arrived as they were about to close, but we arrived in time to taste one of the best Barbera's we had all day!  The highlight of this last stop was meeting the owner of the the vineyards, Mr. Dick Cooper, and some of his family members.   We ended the day on a high note. But wait, there was one more stop which just happened to appear without even planning for it. 

On the way home we put in our home address in the GPS and, low and behold, it took us to Poor Reds. My friend had never been to this well-known establishment which is known for a drink called the "Gold Cadillac." 

All in all a wonderful day...a Sunday, Funday to remember!  There are many more wineries in Amador County and it warrants a trip back to check out the others.  My recommendation is to plan out an area on the map and enjoy that particular group of wineries, bring a lunch and a designated driver.  It is beautiful country and great for some surrounding Sacramento outdoor activities and enjoying some different wineries in California!

With 320 days of sunshine a year, the Sacramento region is a jewel with urban and rural facets. Area chefs (professional and amateur) are quick to recognize local growers who bring high-quality vegetables, fruits, meats, beers and wines to their dining rooms. Rather than equip you with a laundry list of good eats, let me highlight the gourmet ghettos and allow you to discover tasty treasures for yourself:

·         Savor Old Sacramento’s fine dining scene even if you didn’t bring your Sunday best.

Dine on the riverfront or in a number of restored, historic buildings.

·         Bound by 11^th and 16^th streets, near K & L streets, enjoy a variety of cuisines near the Sacramento Convention Center and the State Capitol. Anchors include The Park Downtown (15^th & L), The Firestone (16^th & L), and The Elliott Building (16^th Street, between J & K).

·         L Street & Capitol Avenue between 18^th & 21^st streets are the veins of Midtown's Handle District.  

·         The Sutter District surrounds Sutter’s Fort, but its artery is 28^th Street, between J and N.

·         Explore Midtown along J Street, bound by 18^th and 28^th streets, and R Street between 14th & 15th.
Note: MARRS, on 20^th Street between J & K, is not as distant as we once thought.

·         Tower Café reigns at the heart of the ethnic food enclave on Broadway, between Riverside Blvd. and 26^th Street. Thanks to Capital Public Radio, the local NPR affiliate, for this preview.

·         Luxury defines Financial District dining on Capitol Mall, bound by 4^th and 7^th streets.

Sacramento receives its fair share of one-day visitors. Some are here on business, some are driving through on route to somewhere else, some are just taking a day trip to the State Capital. Some are not even visiting but hosting a day trip for a good friend or family member in town. Ask anyone and I'm sure they have a different idea of how a day should be spent in Sacramento. The "must see" and "can't miss" spots will vary by person but there are some landmarks too that most agree on. 

This is a list of fun things that I usually throw out for the family/couple/individual who have/has never been to Sacramento and looking to get in as much as they can in one fun filled day.

1. The California State Capitol Museum

Along with many hustling & bustling state employees, the Capitol Building houses the California State Capitol Museum. They offer free tours of the Capitol every hour on the hour from 10am-4pm. After the free tour peruse the 40 acre Capitol Park which spans twelve city blocks. The park includes hundreds of species of trees, shrubs, and flowers and numerous monuments and memorials.

2. Old Sacramento


Twenty-eight acres of history and fun including six museums, a river walk and numerous shops and restaurants. Old Sacramento is a National Historic Landmark District and State Historic Park. Visit the California State Railroad Museum or the Delta King Riverboat, an authentic, historic, and permanently moored riverboat for a lunch at their restaurant, the Pilot House. Or if you're feeling adventurous rent a bike from Practical Cycle and ride along the Sacramento River on the popular American River Bike Trail.

3. A Museum...or two or three

Did you know that Sacramento has 27 museums? Some of them are free and some with a minimal charge. There is a museum for every one in Sacramento. For the young ones a visit to Fairytale Town or the Sacramento Zoo (aross the street from each other) ensures a fun day. Are you a history buff? Learn about Sacramento and its beginnings at the Sacramento History Museum or Sutter's Fort State Historic Park.  Or maybe you love art, the newly renovated Crocker Art Museum or the Sojourner Truth Multicultural Arts Museum is calling your name. 4. A Winery

Sacramento is not only surrounded by 8 wine regions (!) but it also has three urban wineries as well right in downtown Sacramento. An afternoon of (responsible) wine tasting can be a fun and scenic afternoon for adults. If you don't want to travel outside the grid, check out Revolution Wines, Sacramento's only midtown winery. But, if you're down for a little drive check out the wineries of the Sierra Foothills, California's Delta Region or in Amador County.

5. Walking Tour

The Downtown Sacramento Partnership offers unique tours through downtown that introduce visitors to the people, places and events that shaped California history. From John Sutter to Cesar Chavez, the tours cover over 150 years of state and local history. Topics range from art and architecture to cultural, religious and urban history. The Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission also offers Public Art Walking Tours. Monumental and intimate works of art can be experiences along streets, in buildings, and in parks throughout downtown. This is just a snapshot of all the fun things to see and do in Sacramento. Truthfully, one day is not enough time to truly appreciate all Sacramento has to offer. Guess you'll just have to come back!

Hello again from the the Wine Gal.  In this blog I will talk about Bogle white wines!  I wanted to wait to taste the 2009 Sauvignon Blanc before I wrote this.  This wine was just introduced to the tasting room this past week.  I wanted to make sure it lived up to the previous year and it did not disappoint.  Winemaker Eric Aafedt did it again!!

The wines I am talking about today are what are available in the our tasting room.  You can always go to the Bogle Facebook page to see what new wines may be coming up. 

In my opinion the 09 Sauv Blanc is just as good as the the 08.  It is light and crisp, I am a lover of pineapple and I can taste that fruit in this vintage.  The 09 is a wonderful wine for this time of year!  It is available in the tasting room and you should see it in your local Raley's or Safeway.

I mentioned that Bogle has a sparkling wine, Blanc de Blancs, which is only available in the tasting room.  This sparkling Chardonnay is worth the drive and the money.  I love, love, love it!!  And, the bottle is so pretty! These Chardonnay grapes come from our ranch in Clarksburg.  Some people shy away from sparkling wines because of the bubbles, but these bubbles, like the song, are tiny, not overpowering!!  So come on out as Bogle offers great Sacramento outdoor activities, of picnicking among the vineyards and drinking a lovely bottle of sparkling Chardonnay, you can't beat that!!  There is nothing better then hearing the sound of a cork popping!

The Bogle Chardonnay, is of course, the staple of most households!  I can bet that most people reading this have tasted our Chardonnay and probably have a bottle in their home!  This is not a huge Chard with lots of butter and oak  but rather crisp and light! Currently we are pouring the 2008 which should also be in your local grocery stores.  But I suggest you come out to the winery! It is one of the closer Sacramento Wineries, that offer great wines and Sacramento outdoor activities.  You can buy a bottle and enjoy the warm Sacramento days that are sure to come!! 

On to the 2008 Riesling, I am not a sweet wine drinker but I must say that the Riesling is rather refreshing during the summer days.  It is considered a semi dry Riesling so it is not syrupy sweet.  It is fermented in 100% stainless steel which gives it that crisp fruity flavor, great with some brie cheese and crackers!!

So out of the Bogle white wines the Sauvignon Blan remains my favorite, my recycle bin can attest to this!  I am taking several bottles on my trip to Southern California to be enjoyed by my family and friends!!

As the weather gets nicer, put Bogle Winery on your list of things to do in Sacramento California.  Bogle is one of many Sacramento weekend events for family and friends!!

My name is Julie and I work for the Sacramento Convention & Visitors Bureau.  I also work at Bogle Winery a few weekends a month pouring wine in the Tasting Room. I know it sounds rough but someone has to do it!!  I would like to introduce you to my office on those weekends, which is the Bogle Tasting Room.  If my information is not enough, Bogle can be found on Facebook, where you can become a fan and see what is happening at the winery. 

Bogle is one of the largest wineries in California. We sold over a million cases last year.  You may recognize the label.  Bogle is located about 20 minutes from downtown Sacramento. 

If you are looking for things to do in Sacramento, California, this should be on your list!  The directions are pretty easy.  You head south on I-5 and take the Pocket Road Exit, turn left and then a right on Freeport Blvd (aka Highway 160), which takes you through the Delta.  Drive through the cute town of Freeport and turn right to go over the Freeport Bridge.  After you cross the bridge you take a left and you will find yourself on the River Road; it is a nice 2- lane road along the Sacramento River which you will take for about 5 miles.  Along the way you will see to your right an industrial area with silos. This is a winery called the Sugar Mill which houses several different wineries.  You will hear more about the Sugar Mill from the other wine gal!  You will pass through the small town of Clarksburg and start to see acres of vineyards on your right. Take a right onto Road 141 and then go left at the "Y" which is Road 144. This is where your road trip becomes a little more interesting. It is a two-way road but very narrow, with a slough on your right and vineyards on your left.  The slough offers some turtle sightings, fishermen and kayaking and maybe a creature lurking under the murky waters!  But it is worth the short (1.5 mile) narrow trip as you will reach Bogle Vineyards on your left!!!

Bogle offers several wines to taste, if you are looking for free events in Sacramento, this is a good choice as there is no charge to taste our fabulous wines.  Bogle has over 1300 acres of vines. The varietal Petite Sirah  is what we grow the most and is our signature wine!  The tasting room sits amongst Chardonnay vineyards and there is a lovely picnic area where you can enjoy your friends and family on a sunny Sacramento day with good food and Bogle wine. Here is a group doing just that.


If you are looking for scenic Sacramento biking areas, ride along the Delta to this winery. Bogle has many cyclist groups stop by for a quick taste.  Sometimes they have their rides pick them up there so they can enjoy more than just a taste!

winemaker himself!!  Just to tease you a bit, my favorite Bogle white wine is Sauvignon Blanc. It is so nice and light, not too grassy, just right for the upcoming spring and summer days we will be having!  I have been known to offer a taste to those who say they don't like light wines only to find out after they have tasted our Sauvignon Blanc that they do!! Oh and to tease you even more we have a lovely sparkling wine made with 100% Chardonnay grapes from our very own ranch and it is only available at the winery!
