Bingo! A Musical Where Everyone Wins

Thursday, October 20, 2011 by Rachael Lankford
Bingo Cosmo Cabaret
A few weeks ago, the Cosmopolitan Cabaret brought a lively new show to Sacramento, "Bingo: A Winning Musical." Just in time for Sacramento's first official month-long celebration of National Arts & Humanities Month, ARTober: 31 Days of Art & Soul, the cast enthusiastically showcase their talents in this witty and entertaining show.

If you are not familiar with the game, you quickly learn that it can get a little tricky and some folks take it very seriously. The story surrounds three eccentric women: Vern, Patsy and Honey and their 15+ year devotion - no matter what obstacles may come their way - to Bingo Night with the girls. Superstition, passion, and intense Bingo the Winning Musicalcompetition are portrayed as the unifying bond between them. Hilarity ensues as a small cast of equally comical characters unravel a surprising discovery! Friendships are tested, relationships are formed and ultimately, everyone wins!

To make it even more interesting, even the audience gets to participate in this high-stakes game! Everyone is given their very own Bingo cards and daubers for periodic interactive parts where prizes are even awarded. Although I didn't get a "Bingo!", I was thoroughly entertained with the entire "experience" of the game.

This would be a great show for a group of friends or colleagues to attend. The Cosmopolitan is walking distance from the Convention Center, Downtown Sacramento hotels, and plenty of restaurants. But with full access (and service) to the tasty food & drink menu from the adjacent Cosmopolitan Cafe, you can have dinner while you watch. To top it off, travel upstairs to the swanky Social Nightclub for an early evening cocktail before the crowd rolls in - or if you're up for it, stay and get your dance on!

Opening on September 29, 2011 the show runs through January 8, 2012.

Show times:
Wed 7pm
Thurs 2pm & 7pm
Fri 8pm
Sat 2pm & 8pm
Sun 2pm

Tickets run between $33-$43 and can be purchased on-line (fees will apply), over the phone at (916) 557-1999, or in person at the Box Office (Mon-Sat 9a-6p).

Maines Mansion Haunted House

Maines Mansion 6th Annual Haunted House: Maines Mansion (2501 I Street); Oct 21-Oct 31, Tues Dusk-11pm; Thurs-Sun Dusk-11pm
About twenty actors and special effects techs entertain up to twenty guests at a time. The show lasts about 30 minutes and they continue doing shows until closing time, more on Saturday and Halloween! This is not your typical haunted house, not a "jump out and get you" place or a "gore-fest," more like a melodrama with a PG-13 story.

Broadway Sacramento's "Shrek the Musical" delights

Wednesday, September 28, 2011 by Rachael Lankford
left to right: Lukas Poost as Shrek, Andre Jordan as Donkey, and Liz Shivener as Princess Fiona in Shrek the Musical 2011-2012 national tour, photo by Joan MarcusEveryone’s favorite curmudgeonly ogre takes the stage at the Community Center Theater for one week only! Broadway Sacramento’s run of Shrek the Musical debuted last night to a packed house, kicking off their season.

Based on the popular film (and book) of similar name, Shrek the Musical brings ogres, princesses, and fairytale creatures to the stage, complete with song and dance. Elaborate sets, fabulous make up, intricate costumes, and innovative theatrics capture your imagination and bring the fairytale to life. It is no easy feat to bring a previously-only-animated world to the live action stage, but Shrek the Musical succeeds in doing so, enwrapping you wholly in the fantasy-world of Shrek and friends.

Luke Yellin as Pinocchio and the fairy tale creatures in ‘Freak Flag’ from Shrek the Musical 2011-2012 national tour, photo by Joan MarcusWhile wonderful for kids, Shrek the Musical also throws several jokes in over their heads for the older crowd, leaving theatre-goers of all ages filled with delight, and ultimately reminding us to “let our freak flag fly.”

Shrek the Musical runs through this Sunday, October 2. Be sure to pick up your Shrek ears before you head into the theatre! Tickets are still available (note: this production is recommended for theatre goers age 4 and older). Showtimes are: Wed 8pm; Thurs 2pm & 8pm; Fri 8pm; Sat 2pm & 8pm; Sun 2pm.

The Broadway Sacramento season continues with Rain: A Tribute to the Beatles (Dec 27-Jan 1), West Side Story (Jan 24-Jan 29), Mamma Mia! (March 13-March 18), Million Dollar Quartet (Apr 17-Apr 22), and Wicked (May 23-June 17).

Sacramento Film & Music Festival SummerFest kicks off at the Crest

Thursday, August 18, 2011 by Rachael Lankford

Sacramento Film & Music Festival SummerFest

The Sacramento Film & Music Festival SummerFest kicked off with a bang last night. A medley of music, fashion and, of course, film, took hold of the historic Crest Theatre in Downtown Sacramento. In the lobby, attendees mingled as live music by Autumn Sky filled the room. The evening continued in the main theatre, where co-festival-directors Nathan Schemel and Tony Sheppard introduced the festival, noting that, while it’s the 12th annual Sacramento Film & Music Festival, it’s actually the first ever SummerFest, since this year marks the beginning of the festival’s split into two parts—the WinterFest (held earlier this year in January) and the current SummerFest, which runs through this Sunday, August 21.

SacBee Fashion ChallengeBefore the screenings took place, Cecile Mouette Downs, co-founder & director of the Sacramento French Film Festival, was presented with the 2011 Film Arts Service Award & red  carpet worthy fashions, made out of newspaper, were modeled in the SacBee's Fashion Challenge (the designs will be on display in the lobby beginning Friday, so check them out!).

The SummerFest debuted with a screening of Sé Merry Doyle’s Jimmy Murakami - Non Alien, a documentary about Oscar-nominated animator Jimmy Murakami’s experience as a young boy in a Japanese concentration camp during World War II, andJimmy Murakami - Non Alien - painting by Jimmy Murakami its influence on his life’s journey. Nathan & Tony noted that “being different in America” is an inadvertent theme in this year’s festival, as it continues with screenings of Hollywood to Dollywood (Sat 7pm) and Fordson: Faith, Fasting, Football (Sun 3pm).

Screenings are held in the evening today and tomorrow and throughout the day Saturday & Sunday. Individual screenings are $10 a piece, but if you mention Sac365 at the box office, you can get an All-Screening Pass for $30 (half off the regular price, and quite a steal if you plan on seeing more than three shows!).
